About
This page contains information about me (Greg Kniffin) and my professional life
and touches on the nature and technical summary of this website.
I am a Software Developer for a mid-sized relocation management company in the Dallas,
Texas metroplex. As a Software Developer, I carry a variety of skillsets to accomplish
many different tasks with a primary focus on web and web application development.
I am a skilled technologist with a background in support, network administration,
and database administration. I have found that having a background in these areas
has really made me a better developer as I am able to understand the complexities
of various issues.
Currently, I develop primarily in VB.NET and infrequently in C#. It seems the more
I word with C#, the more I want to be working in VB.NET - perhaps it is the nature
of the projects that I am currently involved in.
About GregKniffin.com
This web site has been a goal of mine for quite some time, and while my initial
attempt at launching my own website failed, I plan to make this website a vital
learning tool.
This web site was developed using Microsoft technologies. I am a huge fan of Microsoft,
and putting together this website has futher entrenched my opinion towards Microsoft.
This site was designed and built using a several tools, specifically Microsoft's
Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition
and Paint.NET.
Paint.NET is an awesome FREE tool developed by students over at
Washington State University. You can read more about the history of this
tool here. While this tool is not
a replacement for design tools such as Adobe Photoshop, it is a nice, quick, light,
and free tool that has earned a coveted spot in my developer toolbox.
While I did use Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition for the development of this
website, I could have easily used the FREE version:
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition.
Visual Studio and ASP.NET 2.0 make it easy to quickly develop a clean and consistent
website without much effort or a lot of code behind. Some of the ASP.NET 2.0 features
and controls used on this website include: Master Pages, Themes and Skins, Sitemap
and the associated Navigation controls, and
ATLAS.
The purpose of this website is to exercise my development skills and create a small
presence on the web. This site is a learning tool from which I will be able to put
some of my ideas into practice. I have some rather ambitious goals for this website.
Some of the future features of this website, and I hope I can find the time to finish
them all.
While I am a huge fan of Microsoft products, I also use many of the tools produced
by Google including GMail, Calendar, Google Toolbar.
